TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EACH SUBJECT IN GRADE R
MATHEMATICS
-
Each math concept must be firmly embedded in a child.
-
E.g. The number 1 (one) number must first be understood by your child before he / she will understand the number.
-
If you, as parent, explain to your child numbers, number names and word sums just remember that you already understand the concept of the number 1 (one) and the child has not yet.
-
Don't get impatient and say how you don't know what 1 (one) is.
-
The child does not know this physically and to continue to impatiently teach the child you will only give him / her a negative experience of mathematics.
-
Just remember that Grade R is the year where your child captures the basic mathematical concepts.
-
Remember to make it as fun and interesting as possible.
-
Mathematics is not just about working in a book and remembering everything like a parrot, it's about finding 1 (one) stone, 2 (two) flowers & 3 (three) leaves.
-
It is a time of discovery and play as the children learn.
HOME LANGUAGE: ENGLISH
-
One of the aims of Grade R is to develop language skills and knowledge.
-
As a parent, you will communicate with the child in his / her home language.
-
This is because the child acquires knowledge in a language he / she understands.
-
Your child should experience language in a print-rich environment e.g. books, posters, etc.
LIFE SKILLS
-
In Grade R, social development is important.
-
To have healthy relationships with children of their age.
-
Understand that they have the right to say no to any form of abuse.
-
To communicate and be able to listen in a group and to take into account the friends' ideas.
-
To develop an appreciation of cultures through the exposure of relevant stories and songs.
-
Emotional development is also one of the important aspects.
-
How the child sees and feels about him / herself.
-
Exercise control over emotions and how to express these emotions in a socially acceptable way.
-
To take on responsibilities.
-
To cultivate a positive attitude towards reading, a love for reading and to recognize the importance of learning.
-
Large motors form the basis of formal learning.
-
Great motor skills can be gained through activities, through adequate playing opportunities and physical outside play.
-
Fine motor skills can be practiced through art activities and educational games.
FIRST ADDITIONAL:
AFRIKAANS
-
Children get exposure to an additional language in school and even when they are busy with technology e.g. Watch YouTube kids and stories.
-
The purpose of an additional language is to promote knowledge and understanding with 200 words every day.
-
At this age, your child's mind is like a sponge generating large amounts of information from her environment.
-
He / she absorbs everything around them, effortlessly and continuously and language can be so integrated into your child's daily life.
